Smart deployment of battery systems to address grid congestion
Due to increasing grid congestion in the Netherlands, companies are often unable to upgrade their grid connection or face restrictions on feeding electricity back into the grid. Grid operators such as Liander, Enexis and Stedin have announced capacity constraints in multiple regions. For developers of buildings and area developments, this has become a growing bottleneck. Techniplan is therefore increasingly asked by these developers to develop solutions, such as battery storage in combination with smart energy management.
Techniplan aims to investigate whether energy storage by means of a battery is a technically and economically feasible solution for its clients.
The objective of this assignment is to determine the financial and technical feasibility of an energy storage system. The main research question is :
What is the feasibility of deploying energy storage systems to technically and economically resolve grid congestion issues for a client?
To achieve the objective of this study and answer the main research question, the following steps will be taken:
- Investigate factors determining the feasibility of battery storage:
Extensive research will be conducted into the factors that determine whether energy storage is financially and technically feasible as a solution for grid congestion. These include, for example, the sizing of a battery and how and when a battery can be optimally deployed. - Analysis of technical and financial scenarios:
The identified factors will be translated into quantitative scenarios. This includes examining how investment costs relate to annual energy cost savings, what the payback period is for different battery sizes, from which battery sizes the financial and technical benefits diminish, and from which power levels the application of a battery becomes technically unfeasible.
3.Development of tool for feasibility studies: The analysis and research will be developed into an advisory tool that can be used within Techniplan. This may take the form of a set of criteria, a flowchart, or a guideline to assess the feasibility of an energy storage system. Through this assignment, Techniplan will be provided with a well-founded and practical method for determining the feasibility of an electrical energy storage system, which can be effectively applied in future projects.
