The Company

DC Opportunities R&D is a young startup located within the company incubator YES!Delft. We focus on developing direct current (DC) solutions that respond to the current energy transition. In this broad context, DC Opportunities is working in various fields including solar home systems, rural electrification, electromobility, microgrid components, USB-PD applications, and end-user appliances. There is a hard-working ethic, however in an informal and comfortable setting.

The Project: Flexible Meshed DC Grid Project

The project aims to create a next-generation Flexible Meshed DC Grid. The energy transition challenges the current AC infrastructure. Besides, most new resources and consumers are internally based on DC. Distribution grids based on DC can improve the capacity of the existing infrastructure and have enhanced control and protection capabilities. The objective is an efficient bipolar meshed DC distribution grid with bidirectional power flow and flexible demand. In other words, a flexible grid that can proactively respond to consumer demands.

The Project: Rural Electrification Project

More than a billion people still lack access to electricity, which for most of us is a basic need. While access to electricity is not a solution to poverty, it is a necessary actuator. The most alarming amount of these people live in rural areas of developing countries. The challenges entailed in geographical obstacles together with limited and volatile resources result in the need to develop tailored solutions for these conditions. The goal of this project, therefore, is to develop a modular Solar Home System tailored for this application in order to provide a long-term reliable solution. The prototype of the modular SHS will be field-tested in the near future in Ethiopia during a pilot project.

MSc. Thesis Opportunities

Since the company is a young-start-up focusing on Research and Development, it hosts several main project topics that can be extended according to the implementers experience and interests. In a Flex Meshed DC grid project, the projects can vary from

● testing high power planar transformers
● implementation of bipolar OPF algorithm on converters in real time tests.

 In a Rural Electrification project, the projects can vary from

● implementing a reliable data management and communication system
● building a user-interface/ application for data feedback.
